The folk art Jianzhi, a traditional style of papercutting in China, originated from cutting patterns for rich Chinese embroideries.

Although papercutting is popular around the globe, only the Chinese paper cut – Jianzhi – has been included (in 2009) in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. In the same year, Dazheng Jianzhi was recognized and listed as one of the Tianjin intangible culture heritages.

Dazheng is a small village in Dongli district, Tianjin. Villagers enjoy papercutting as a daily amusement. As a result, 80 percent of the household income in the village comes from papercutting: the 200 households in the village have created more than six million sets of paper-cuts since 2003.
